ATM with over Rs 9 lakh stolen in Gurugram

- PIYUSH OHRIE

GURUGRAM: If there was an impression that the trend of ATM thefts has stopped in Gurugram, the reality is different as on Monday night another ATM was successfully taken away by the robbers. This time the robbers targetted an HDFC ATM situated in the Wazirabad village near Sector-53.

According to law enforcement officials, the ATM contained Rs 9 lakh. The Gururgam police has filed a complaint at the Sector-53 police station under section 380 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The police are yet to make any arrest in the case.

The growing trends of ATM thefts in Gurugram is a major concern for the law enforcement officials. The dar- ing attempts of burglars to rob huge sums of money by uprooting and taking away the ATMS have become a major challenge for law enforcement officials in Gurugram. One such brazen attempt where robbers were again successful in their attempt in carrying the heist was at Lakshman Vihar where they were able to steal over Rs 24 lakh from a private bank ATM.

It was later found that the ATM kiosk did not have any guard for over three months, a major lapse that was perfectly exploited. Moreover, the CCTV footages were also not able to collect the images well. Despite various failures, most of the robbers are targeting the ATMS. Worryingly, not only in desolate areas but also in posh areas, these robberies are being committed frequently. Reportedly, there are over 1,300 ATMS operational in the city.

Taking cognisance of the major law and order challenge, the Deputy Commissioner's office earlier this year had directed that all the ATMS must install CCTV cameras. Another major challenge that seems to plague the city is the rise in cyber crime cases.
