JULIANNE MOORE OPENS UP ABOUT RECENT ‘TRAUMATIC EVENTS’

‘TRAUMATIC EVENTS’

-

Oscar winner Julianne Moore has praised the “brave individuals” as she talked about the “traumatic events” of the past one year in Hollywood. Speaking at L’oreal’s Worth It stage on the Croisette on the sidelines of the Cannes Film Festival, Moore said the recent events of past have led to a positive change in the industry.

“We were fortunate enough or unfortunate enough, depending on how you view it to have had several really traumatic events in our industry, events people were not disclosing and a lot of people were not aware of,” Moore said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The sexual harassment allega- tions against disgraced media mogul Harvey Weinstein, which were first reported by The New Yorker and The New York Times, opened a pandora’s box and saw multiple people coming forward to talk about their experience of sex abuse in Hollywood. The scandal also led to the birth of global movements such as #Metoo and Time’s Up against the sexual harassment at workplace. They also ensured that women get equal pay as compared to their male counterparts.

Moore, who won an Oscar for her role in the film Still Alice, said the women who came forward were “a few very, very brave individuals” and they set a precedent which was followed by other women in other industries. “What has been so marvellous is the bravery of this group of people which has allowed it to happen all over the world,” Moore said.

“Because we are human beings who crave community and crave solidarity in a sense we are herd animals when people step forward that way, it allows other people to come forward, too, and it’s a sea change. Because of our unity and solidarity, we feel the ability to manifest change. It’s not just entertainment. It’s really, really important to stress that it’s about equity and safety all over the world,” she added.

Moore also said that she discussed the recent events with her family as her children were “very affected”.
