GURUGRAM: Days after the incident the rape of a six-yearold girl in Gurugram’s Manesar was reported, another rape of a minor was reported on Monday, this time the victim being a five-year-old.

The accused, who reportedly is a juvenile, lured the victim by offering her sweets and then raped her. He has been booked under POSCO Act.

The situation does not seem to be favourable for the security of minors even in the Millennium City. In just three months of this year, already 30 cases of sexual crimes against minors have been filed in the city.

Gurugram, along with its neighbour Faridabad, leads the list of cities with sexual crimes against minors.

In 2017, there were 106 cases of sexual crimes against minors while in 2016 there were 115. Not only sexual crimes but the law enforcement officials have to deal with increased cases of human trafficking. In 2017, as many as 154 minors were kidnapped from the city out of which 115 were girls. In the period from 2012 to 2017, over 1,062 children have been kidnapped out of which 677 were girls. According to Gurugram police, the gangs from Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan are highly active in committing such crimes.

For a city where there were over 100 cases of sexual assault against minors, law enforcement officials highlight the challenges in the conviction of the criminals. Citing the difficulties, officials mention that there is a need to set up fast track courts so that the convictions can be secured at a quicker pace.

Officials also indicate that in over 80 per cent cases, the culprits know the rape survivor well. In the long duration of the legal proceedings, the victim’s family seeks to compromise.
