NEW DELHI: Students who have studied modern Indian languages ( MIL) such as Punjabi and Urdu in their school curriculum will get benefit of up to 10 per cent additional points on the aggregate of their best four subjects, if they choose these languages in BA programme in Delhi University.

According to a University official, “Applicants who choose the MIL as a subject in BA programme will get additional benefit in colleges where it is offered. Aspirants will be given an advantage of 10 per cent points on their best four.”

“This step is an attempt to promote the study of Indian languages at higher levels,” said the official.

The applicant will get the advantage only in select colleges, where the MIL is being offered as a subject. The MILS offered by the University are Punjabi, Tamil, Urdu, Telugu and Bengali.

There are many students have studied modern Indian languages in their school academic curriculum and the varsity encourages them to continue to study the language at graduation level.

“If an applicant opts for MILS (except Hindi) as a subject, an advantage of up to 10 per cent may be given in the ‘Best Four’ in those colleges where MIL is offered as a subject. At present, 30 colleges affiliated to DU, including Miranda House, Kamla Nehru College and Hindu College, offer MILS such as Urdu, Sanskrit, Tamil, Punjabi, Telegu and Bengali,” a university official said.

Officials said that this move will now exhort aspirants to take up MIL in school.

According to reports, 1.73 lakh applications were registered last year and BA programme is considered as one of the most favourite courses.

There are very few boards in the country that give students the choice to take a language as an elective. Most students generally opt for core English or Hindi.

For admission to BA programme, students have to take one language and any three elective subjects. But those who change their stream will face a deduction of up to five per cent on best four percentage.
