Trio held for duping tourists

NEW DELHI: Delhi Police on Wednesday said they have unearthed a network of touts, who used to target tourists and duped them into buying ordinary ornaments at exorbitant prices and later collected commission from the shops.

Cops said the three arrested in the case were identified as Attar Malhotra, Shiv Kumar Gupta and Praateek Malik. all residents of Delhi.

“The Delhi police has been keeping an eye for a while on the touts active in the New Delhi area. Our team has arrested several others in different cases of cheating of tourists in Delhi.

“We have formed a special team in this regard that actively scans the area and spots the touts active around tourists with an intention to dupe them,” said Madhur Verma, Deputy Commission­er of Police (New Delhi).

The touts would first strike up a conversati­on with tourists and win their confidence.

Then, the accused used to take them to places which sold ornaments and convinced the tourists to buy these ornaments and jewellery at rates much higher than their true worth.

Later, the gang members would come back and collect their commission from the shop owners.

“We laid a trap opposite Radisson Blue Marina hotel in Connaught Place and Scindia House and arrested the trio under 4 (a) Delhi Prevention of Touting and Malpractic­es against Tourists Act, 2010,” the DCP said.
