A 31-year-old man has been arrested after he threw his sixyear-old son to death into the Agra canal situated in south east Delhi, Delhi Police said on Sunday.

Cops added that after he was arrested, the remorseless father told police the reason behind the murder was that his son was crying to eat momos, which irritated the father and led him to commit the gruesome murder.

According to police, Jaitpur police station received a PCR call on Saturday at 10.10 pm, wherein the caller said that a man had thrown his son into the Agra canal.

Without wasting any time, staff from the police station rushed to spot and saw that passersby and caught hold of the man, immediately after they saw him throw the child into the canal from Khadar Puliya.

On verification, cops found that the accused was Sanjay Alwi, a resident of Bhangar Mohalla in Madanpur Khadar area.

Cops said that Alwi was under the influence of alcohol when he was walking on Khadar Puliya, with his son named Ayaan.

Suddenly, the boy asked his father to buy him momos to eat. The father refused and the child then started crying.

Enraged, the father lifted the sixyear-old and threw him into the canal.

Shocked passersby caught Alwi in the act and caught him immediately.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East) Chinmoy Biswal on Sunday stated once the PCR call was made, a team of divers was deputed by police, while the fire brigade and disaster team also called in their divers.

Rescue operations started on Saturday night, but the teams found no clue of the boy in the dark.

Eventually, more than five hours later, Ayaan’s body was recovered from the canal on Sunday afternoon.

A case under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code was registered against the father and he was arrested.

When asked about the profile of the accused, the DCP said that Alwi is an e-rickshaw driver and living with his grandmother. He got married in 2004 to one Ashma, with whom he had three children, aged 11, 10 and the sixyear-old Ayaan.

Police claimed during interrogation, the accused showed no remorse whatsoever for murdering his son.

He also told investigators that he was unable to feed his child, which left him frustrated for a long time.
