IPL GAMBLERS EXPLOITED TECHNOLOGY

As per data, over 750 persons held between April 1 and May 15 for gambling

NEW DELHI: The 2018 Indian Premier League (IPL) witnessed a change in the modus operandi of gamblers. This year, the racket was more organised and instead of using registers and notepads for betting, the accused misused technology to earn money and dodge police investigat­ion. The overall data related to gambling, which was accessed by the Millennium

Post, claimed that from April 1 to May 15, more than 200 cases were registered and over 750 persons were nabbed from different parts of the Capital. The arrests also included those who were involved in the IPL betting.

The highest number of the arrests came from Shahdara district which busted the modus operandi where betting racket software and gaming websites were being used for the illegal activity. The use of the betting software was to maintain records of gambling whereas for gambling websites an account was created by a person living outside India or in a country where betting is legal and the password was sent to the Indian associate and they played the gambling here.

The district also busted another technique of live betting. One of the accused sits in the stadium from where he provides the details to other bookies over the phone. Due to the difference in time in the television broadcast, they used to know the details of the game before the telecast and manipulate the whole bidding. The Shahdara district police also conducted a drive against gambling and arrested more than 50 persons.

One IPL gambling racket was busted by Farsh Bazaar Police Staion where 13 persons were arrested and cash Rs 44,510, output box having 19 parallel lines, 28 mobile phones, 1 LED TV and others seized. The accused were operating racket by creating a mini exchange.

The North-east Delhi also arrested four persons who were using the old technique of betting through watching TV and contacting other bookies regarding the rate. Police said they used to watch live IPL matches and note down bets from gambler by using mobile phones. The cash was collected in advance from the gambler as token money. The West Delhi also busted a gang in which the accused used to take the Betting Rate's of IPL 20-20 Cricket Match of Delhi Vs Chennai per ball per over from one person over the phone and further gave the same to the punters.

The Feroz Shah Kotla ground witnessed seven IPL matches in Delhi which were guarded by more than 800 police personnel including five additional DCPS. Six cases of pickpocket­ing have been registered in IP Estate police station.
