Murder solved after victim’s identity is ascertained from FB

NEW DELHI: To identify the victim in a blind murder case in Okhla industrial area, who was stabbed 14 times with a sharp weapon last Saturday, Delhi Police first searched his pockets. All they found, however, was a bank slip with the name Arvind Chauhan on it.

Since the slip had blood stains on it, cops assumed that motive of the murder to be robbery, as the culprit would have checked the victim's pockets if it were a planned murder.

With just the victim's name, the technical team of South East Delhi Police started a random search on Facebook. Fortunately, they found the social media profile of a man resembling the deceased.

The team then contacted his kin and the body was sent for post-mortem.

Eventually, detailed enquiry of residents in the victim's locality was conducted, informers were deployed and technical surveillance was mounted.

Soon, Chauhan's mobile phone was traced to be with a man, identified as Sandeep alias Bulli.

“Our team arrested Sandeep from Okhla Phase 1,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East) Chinmoy Biswal said on Wednesday.

During Sandeep's interrogation, the sequence of events came to light. He disclosed that he is an alcoholic and used to work in Punjab as painter and came to Delhi four days ago where he began staying with his brother in Okhla.

Around 10 pm, on May 26, Sandeep had a craving for beer but no money to fulfill his need.

He went to a nearby meat shop from where he stole a butcher knife, and then went towards Container Depot looking for an easy target to rob, who happened to be Chauhan.

However, Arvind resisted the robbery bid and caught hold of Sandeep by the hair. A panicked Sandeep then stabbed Chauhan 14 times, killing him on the spot, and fled. NEW DELHI: Two persons were injured after a team of Delhi power distribution company (discom) BSES checking power theft was allegedly attacked by a mob in Lal Kuan locality of Pul Prahladpur area of Delhi, the company said on Wednesday.

Describing the locality as a "high power theft area in south Delhi," a BSES statement said it is a locality where it loses around 2-3 million units of electricity annually.

"After detecting direct theft of electricity and booking one Irfan at C-40 Lal Kuan, the team moved to the adjoining premises. Meanwhile, Akbar (father of Irfan), along with the resident of C-33 (Sabbir Ansari) and his son, launched an unprovoked attack on BSES' inspection team with sticks and bricks," it said.

The discom said a case of power theft had already been registered against Akbar. "Sabbir Ansari too had been booked for power theft in 2011," it said.

In the ensuing melee, two team leaders -- Manish Sharma and Vishal Prabhakar -- sustained serious injuries. While Vishal received injuries in his right leg, Manish sustained injuries on his chest and leg. "Police was called by dialling 100 and senior BSES officials too rushed to the venue. They took the injured to the AIIMS Trauma Centre," the company said. An FIR under relevant sections of the IPC was filed against the culprits.

While Sabbir and Akbar have been arrested, Irfan is absconding, it added. According to the discom, the bail applications of the arrested accused were rejected on Tuesday by the Metropolitan Magistrate at the Saket Court. GURUGRAM: Three persons were critically injured after a lift fell from the ninth floor of a high-rise building in Gurugram on late Tuesday evening, police said on Wednesday. The incident took place in the Regency Park-ii high-rise apartments in DLF Phase-4 area.

The lift fell from the ninth floor and crashed in the minus two floor in the basement.

The injured included a woman resident of the building, her driver and her domestic help. All three were admitted to a private hospital and are undergoing treatment.

A formal complaint about the incident was registered at Sector-29 police station on Wednesday, and a case was registered under section 287 (negligent conduct with respect to machinery) of the Indian Penal Code.

Complaints regarding the lift not functioning properly were made earlier by the residents. However, no action taken by the builder, the residents alleged.

In October last year, residents of Fresco condominium society at Golf Course extension road had filed a police complaint against the developer Unitech for not repairing the malfunctioning lifts.

The residents had stated that three children between the ages of ten and twelve had once got trapped in the lift for over 20 minutes.

In another incident, a woman in her late sixties faced a similar ordeal.

After police intervention, the matter between the residents and the developer was eventually resolved amicably.

In another case of poorly maintained lifts in Gurugram reported last year, more than 20 persons including boys and girls were stuck in a lift for more than an hour in a posh mall at Golf Course road.

After reports emerged of many fainting of suffocation, they were eventually rescued by Gurugram Police personnel, who had to undertake a challenging rescue operation.

There have been complaints that most residential societies and malls in Gurugram do not maintain their lifts, so as to save expenses.

Some resident welfare associations have also alleged that maintenance of lifts is mostly outsourced to agencies, who do no maintain lifts properly and use delay in payments as a excuse for their callous attitude.
