37-year-old auto driver Umesh lands in hospital after slashing his wrists
NEW DELHI: A 37-year-old auto-rickshaw driver murdered his wife and later tried to commit suicide, but failed in his attempt in south Delhi’s Sangam Vihar on Friday night.
Delhi Police on Saturday said they received a call that a man had attempted suicide. When cops reached the hospital from where the call was made, they found that the wife Jyoti was already dead and her body had been shifted to the mortuary.
Meanwhile, the husband Umesh, was in semi-conscious condition. Umesh’s condition is now said to be stable.
When police questioned Umesh, he revealed to cops that there were some personal issues between him and his 26-year-old wife for the last five years, since they had got married.
“On Friday morning, the couple had an argument which culminated into Umesh strangulated Jyoti, who was a housewife,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Romil Baaniya said on Saturday.
Panicked, Umesh then attempted suicide by hanging himself, but failed. He attempted to kill himself again, this time by slashing his wrists, but failed the second time as well.
Police said they has registered a case under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code and waiting for the accused to get discharged from the hospital. They added that a final statement from Umesh will be taken once he is declared fit for statement.
The exact reason for the verbal argument is yet to be determined, a senior police official said.
A team of investigators, on Saturday, collected evidence from the couple’s residence. Friends and family members of the couple were contacted and many of them questioned to know about the’s couple’s relationship post marriage.
“In this regard, SDM kalkaji has been informed and the statement of the family of the deceased were recorded before the SDM. The post-mortem report has come and the reason for death came out to be strangulation. We are taking legal action accordingly,” the DCP further said.
