GURUGRAM: The Millennium City is slowly and steadily becoming a happy hunting ground for cyber criminals, operating from not just the national Capital but other parts of the nation. In less than five months this year, over 1,000 cyber crime cases have already been registered in Gurugram.

Another problem is that most of the cases filed are yet to be solved and many others in the preliminary stages of investigation. To tackle cyber crimes, in March, a dedicated cyber crime police station was inaugurated in the city.

Despite its opening, less than 50 cases have so far been registered in the state-of-theart police station.

This year, there have been some brazen cases that highlight the dangers and vulnerabilities that internet users can fall victims to when cyber criminals target them.

In one of the biggest cyber crimes reported in the city, in May, money from over 50 account holders for HDFC Bank who used the ATM at Unitech Cyber park was stolen. Cops suspect there may be more victims, as the culprits had managed to cloning debit cards used in the ATM by placing a chip inside the machine.

The plan to steal data from the cards was well executed, with the chip used for cloning the debit cards placed some- where in the last week of April. According to some complaints, similar cases were also reported in other places of Delhi-ncr.

There were also cases where law enforcement officilas busted nearly a dozen fake call centres, where the culprits duped people residing in areas of United States and some European countries.

In another case, some cyber criminals even exploited online payment companies, such as Mobikwik.

Gurugram Police realised the dangers posed by cyber crimes in 2015 and 2016, and in 2017, the frequency of cyber crimes in Gurugram achieved greater proportions.

A series of crimes started where various multinational companies started losing vital data and amounts through ransomware virus ended with the digital medium being used for illegal kidney trade.

With 200 crimes registered on monthly basis, over 3,252 cases were registered last year. This was much higher that the 2,402 cases filed in 2016.

As seen in 2016, last year too saw crimes related to online banking thefts, credit and debit card frauds in Gurugram.

In 2016, 1,343 cases relating to internet banking fraud were registered, while in 2017, the number was 1,848.

Going by the current trend, the number of cyber crimes reported by the end of this year may break all dubious records.
