Gang of 10 held for robbing ex-army man’s wife

NEW DELHI: When an exarmy officer’s wife answered the doorbell post afternoon on 25 June, little did she know that her next half an hour would be full of horror and trauma.

The men at the door pushed her inside and gagged her with a duct tape. The lady could only identify a man among the four whom she recalled to be her ex-maid’s husband who was of Nepali origin. Also, one of them was her ex-servant who left 1.5 years ago. She also realised that all the four were having similar features and were of Nepali origin.

While the robbery was going on at the Army officer’s house in Mansarovar Garden, he was at Nehru Place in his office. He received a call from his wife that she has been robbed by a gang of Nepali men. Soon, the police were informed about the robbery. The robbers had taken away gold jewellery worth approximat­ely Rs 24.5 lakh, cash Rs 4-5 lakh, 2 expensive mobile phones and 2 wrist watches.

Soon, seven teams of West Delhi district were working on it under the supervisio­n of Anil Sharma, SHO, Kirti Nagar. Clues were gathered from CCTV cameras installed in the neighbourh­ood.

“Our teams took screenshot­s of the CCTV grab of the accused. On enquiry in the neighbourh­ood, the identity of the mastermind was establishe­d as Manish, a resident of Nepal and all other gang members were also found to be of Nepali origin,” said Vijay Kumar, DCP West Delhi.

Meanwhile, another team worked on the escape routes and informatio­n of all the Nepal borders like Tanakpur, Sunauli and Banwasa borders which could be used by the robbers to enter into Nepal via road was gathered. Also, the police teams reached the airports to check out the accused who turned out to be 10 in number including two girls.

“Our team got success when the gang was spotted boarding a bus at ISBT in the CCTV. The driver, when contacted over phone, told us that they deboarded at Garhmuktes­hwar. We immediatel­y checked the private vehicles at Banwasa and arrested Manish along with his 7 associated including one of their female friends,” said the DCP.

Later, two more were arrested including one more girl of the Nepali origin.

A 40-year-old head constable Delhi Police was killed after his motorcycle was reportedly hit by an unidentifi­ed vehicle on Geeta Colony Road near Shakarpur area in east Delhi on Tuesday night.

The victim Rohit Nayar was rushed to nearby Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital by some passersby, where he was declared dead, said Deputy Commission­er of Police (East) Pankaj Singh on Wednesday.

Nayar was posted at the Sarita Vihar police station in southeast Delhi and had joined the force in 1997, he added.

The deceased was a resident of Krishna Nagar in Shahdara and is survived by his wife and two children, aged eight and two respective­ly.

Nayar’s body has been sent for post-mortem and his family has been informed.

Meanwhile, the police has formed teams to locate the vehicle which has caused the accident.

CCTV footage from nearby areas is are being scanned to get any evidence of the offending vehicle or its driver.

Cops said that had the driver stopped and taken Nayar to the hospital in the golden hour, he could have been saved. However, by the time Nayar was taken to the hospital by the others, he succumbed to his injuries.
