SDMC inducts new drain cleaning machines

- OUR CORRESPONDENT

Shikha Rai, chairperson of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) Standing committee, on Saturday said that drain cleaning is becoming more mechanised for urgent troubleshooting with the new suction-cum-jetting machines, as these are useful for maintaining the storm/ mixed water drains.

Rai’s comments came after she flagged off six advanced suction-jetting machines, three each for the South and Central zone of SDMC, at a function at the headquarters of the South zone at Green Park.

Chairperson of South zone ward committee Tulsi Joshi, South zone deputy commissioner Nidhi Srivastava and many councillors attended the programme.

The machines are fitted with appropriate safety features during work, such as pressure regulating and pressure relief valves for ensuring worker safety.

Rai said that jetting pressure is used for flushing and de-chocking drains and culverts, as well as ensuring smooth flow. Meanwhile, the suction effect is meant for immediate relief during rains and also for the purpose of sucking slurry/sludge from the drains even during regular activity.

She further said that the new machines have also been deployed to improve the level of sanitation and overcome the spread of vector-borne diseases such as chikungunya, dengue, and malaria due to stagnation of water because of choked drains.
