NEW DELHI: In view of the upcoming Independence Day, the Delhi Metro Police had started a Whatsapp number about a week ago where commuters can send messages regarding any loophole or negligence in the security cover. The police have received many complaints about drug addicts and suspicious persons roaming around the metro stations.

According to the police, they have received more than 80 messages in which people have praised the initiative and they have also sent complaints about suspicious persons roaming around the metro stations. "The commuters have complained about the problem of drug addicts roaming around the metro stations. We are taking action as per law," said a police officer, adding that the complaints came from the stations situated in Central Delhi areas like Karol Bagh.

In one such Whatsapp message, a senior citizen told the police about the problems related to the escalators inside the metro stations. The matter was sent to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation(dmrc) immediately. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Metro) Deepak Gauri stated that so far the response is good and people are coming up with their grievances. "It is a pilot project and we have started with posters, which were placed in Rajiv Chowk and Kashmiri Gate metro stations. People from different areas of the city are sending their messages," added the DCP.

Joint Commissioner of Police ( Transport) Atul Katiyar has told the officials to maintain zero tolerance against crime and recently complaint boxes were installed in Railway and Metro stations so that the victims of any crime can put their grievances in writing inside the complaint boxes. A dedicated helpline 1511 is also available where the commuters can report to the police if they find anything suspicious.

The police claimed that the Whatsapp number is a part of the security management for the upcoming Independence Day.
