A five-storey under-construction building collapsed here on Sunday, killing at least one person and injuring some others, officials said. The building was located in Akash Nagar area of the Masuri police station limits.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were pressed into service soon after the incident and rescue and search operations were underway, police said.

“So far, we have pulled out one dead body and rescued one person trapped in the debris,” a senior NDRF official said. The Ghaziabad police said in a tweet that some labourers were rescued and sent to a hospital for treatment.

There was no report as yet if there were more people trapped in the collapsed structure. The incident comes within a week of a six-storey under-construction building collapsing on another five-storey building in Greater Noida.

The twin-building collapse in Shahberi village had claimed nine lives, including that of a toddler and two women.

In yet another major mishap in the National Capital Region, at least one person has been killed and nine others injured after an under-construction five-storey building collapsed in Ghaziabad’s Masuri area. Rescue operation is underway and police fear that many people trapped under the debris.

According to reports, the building, located in Misal Garhi area of Masuri, collapsed around 3 pm on Sunday. The building was near completion and no one was living in it. However, many labourers were working at the construction site when the incident took place.

Locals and officials from Ghaziabad Police immediately began rescue work and took out at least four labourers.

Later, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) reached the spot and began a large rescue operation.

Police said that the rescued persons included two children and two women, who have been sent to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Vaibhav Krishna, Senior Superintdent of Police (SSP), Ghaziabad, said that the rescue operation is being undertaken at a fast pace, however rain and water-logging in the area are causing some hindrance in the process.

“Our team is trying to rescue everyone as quickly as possible. NDRF teams, dog squad and personnel from Ghaziabad Police are involved in the rescue operation,” Krishna said.

Police officials said that the owner of the building has been identified as one Prasanjeet, who went missing from his residence soon after the building collapse.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed the District Magistrate and SSP of Ghaziabad to visit the site of building collapse and take immediate action for rescue operations along with NDRF and lodge an FIR and take action against those guilty.

The Chief Minister also announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the family members of the deceased, while relief of Rs 50, 000 will be provided to family members of those found injured in the incident.

Ghaziabad District Magistrate Ritu Maheshwari has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the matter.

Meanwhile, Meerut divisional Commissioner Amita C Meshram has been appointed by the Uttar Pradesh government to probe into the matter.

The incident comes six days after a twin building collapse in Shahberi village of Greater Noida.

On July 17, a six-floor under-construction building crashed on a six-storey building next to it, bringing it down as well. At the time of the accident, at least 12 labourers and eight to ten families were residing in both the buildings. Nine people, including an infant, were killed in the collapse.
