MAN, GRANDMOTHER DIE IN ROAD MISHAP

- ZAFAR ABBAS

When 30-yearold Amit took his 65-yearold grandmother Leelawati for some work in North-east Delhi in his car, he never knew this would be his last ride. At around 11:30 am on Tuesday when their i10 car reached near the DC office in Nand Nagari, it was hit by a speeding cluster bus from behind. The impact was so powerful that the car rammed into the DTC bus ahead of it. Within moments, the car was sandwiched between the two buses and both the elderly woman and her grandson were stuck inside.

“We heard a huge thud. We saw the car turning into a mangled piece of metal. The bus in the behind was overspeeding and had hit the car. We all then rushed to the car to rescue the two persons stuck inside it. We had to break and cut the car to take them out,” said a local man who tried to rescue the woman and her grandson.

It took around 20 minutes for the police and locals to take the bodies out. People used wooden planks and whatever other tools they could lay their hands on to cut open the doors and windows of the car but by the time, the duo was taken out, they were already dead. Police said that they called the disaster management team for faster rescue but they did not turn up. “As soon as we received a call of the accident, we immediately called up the disaster management team as they are better equipped to handle such cases which require saving lives with immediate action. However, they did not turn up, but we got immense help from the public,” said a senior police officer.

The deceased woman and her grandson were residents of Kadkaddooma. The police took the bodies to GTB hospital where after the post-mortem report, the bodies were handed over to their relatives.

“We have registered a case under 279 and 304 (A) sections of IPC against the erring driver who is absconding. Efforts are on to arrest him,” said DCP North East Delhi Atul Kumar Thakur.
