DCW conducted over 500 rescue ops in three years

- ABHAY SINGH

It is often found that the girls from remote areas of the country are brought to the Capital on the promise of a better life but in the city, they are forced for marriage or placed as a domestic help. To save the victims from the clutches of human traffickers, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) in the past three years conducted around 535 rescue operations.

The DCW claimed that it rescued hundreds of girls and women from the clutches of traffickers, fraud godmen, forced domestic work, child marriage and other dangerous situations. DCW Chairperson Swati Maliwal told the Millen

nium Post that in next three years, she will be focussing more to curb human trafficking in the national capital.

The commission has rescued several girls working as domestic help in various parts of Delhi and NCR and is working with the government to put in place a strong law for the regulation of placement agencies.

Upon the directions of the high court, DCW Chairperson visited an ashram run by Baba Virender Dev Dixit in Rohini. The godman faces allegations of rape and abetting to suicide. The DCW managed to rescue around 42 minor girls from the ashram who were housed in inhuman cage-like conditions. Homeless people are vulnerable to trafficking and DCW Chairperson and members have often slept in night shelters to ascertain the condition experienced by them.

In cases of child marriage, the commission is in the process of collating data from the districts regarding the extent of the problem as well as the issues faced by the authorities in addressing the issue. The DCW through its Rape Crisis Cell has facilitated the provision of compensation to 559 survivors in the past three years. "Presently, the Commission is working with the government to create a policy for rehabilitation of survivors of commercial sexual exploitation and trafficking," said DCW official.
