18 women rescued from confinement in South Delhi
NEW DELHI: A day after 16 Nepalese women were rescued from traffickers in Munirka, 18 more women including 16 Nepalese were rescued from a house in Mehrauli on Monday.
The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) alleged that these girls were trafficked into Delhi and were to be sold to Gulf countries for prostitution.
The rescue operation was conducted after the Varanasi Police received information about the confinement of the women in South Delhi. They contacted the Delhi Police and women were rescued in a joint operation on Monday afternoon.
In a press statement, DCW claimed that Crime Branch of Varanasi police registered an FIR on 23 July regarding 19 women from Nepal being trafficked into Delhi and sold to Gulf countries for prostitution.
The Varanasi police raided the house in Maidangarhi. They informed the women commission, so DCW Chief Swati Maliwal reached the spot.
“As many as 68 passports which include those of 61 Nepalese and seven Indian nationals were recovered from the house," said DCW.
DCW chief Swati Maliwal along with other members of the commission interacted with the women who informed them that they were brought to Delhi on the promise of jobs. They were economically weak and belonged to the earthquakeaffected regions of Nepal.
"Most of them have lost their homes and families in the earthquake. They were in the age group of 18 to 30 years," claimed the press statement.
DCW Chief stated, "Delhi has become a hub of human trafficking. DCW finds out about these rackets and expose them. Varanasi police informed me that the Maidangarhi house has been used for past few years for trafficking girls in batches. How can the local police not know about the same?"
However, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Romil Baaniya stated that after receiving the input, Delhi Police started a joint operation which led to the rescue of the women and three accused involved in the case were arrested.
