Houses of two BJP leaders burgled in Gurugram

- PIYUSH OHRIE

GURUGRAM: In less than a day, houses of two prominent politicians affiliated with the BJP were burgled in Gurugram. While one politician Kanta Devi has earlier had two stints as Cabinet Minister in Haryana government, the other victim is Raman Malik who is the spokesperson for the state BJP unit. Kanta Devi who has served as animal husbandry minister and the environment minister in the Bansi Lal and Om Prakash Chautala government had gone to the United States to visit her son when the robbers burgled her house in Sector-49.

Raman Malik had also gone to Chandigarh on an official work when his house in South City area was targetted. The brazenness of the robbers in both the cases can be gauged from the fact that inclusive of electronic items, assets worth

lakhs of rupees have been sto

len. The case under Section 380 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered in both the cases. The victims have ranged from a businessman, MNC professional to recently a retired Army officer. Not only the bungalows in posh residential colonies are being burgled but even high rise condominiums are being targeted.

In most of the residential colonies like Palam Vihar, Ardee City, Sushant Lok, and Sector -56, residents have complained that burglars have been successful in their robbery attempts in the daylight. The dangers of daylight robbery were witnessed earlier this year when a group of robbers entered a house in Sector-28 during daytime and beat up the elderly woman who was alone in the city. In September last year, a 55-year-old widow was brutally murdered in her Sushant Lok bungalow after suspected burglars ransacked the house.

“Robberies have been a major law and order problem in the city. However, the biggest concern is most of these criminals are targeting houses even in the daylight and are also successful in their attempt. Ironically, not only are these people targeting wealthy houses but even the middle classes are not secure,” said Ranjit Dhawan, a city resident.

“As the population of the city increases, crimes like robbery also will be reported on a large scale. We have taken cognisance of it and are taking actions. We have been successful to crack most of the cases,” said a senior police official from Gurugram police.
