GURUGRAM: In a major breakthrough for Gurugram Police and the Crime Branch of Chandigarh Police, three Romanian nationals involved in cloning debit cards and stealing money from banks have been arrested.

Police sources on Tuesday said their were hunting for the gang after they stole money from a Canara Bank branch in Chandigarh.

The gang was also planning to target various public and private sector banks across the Delhi-national Capital Region, the sources added.

The arrested men have been identified as Miccea Lechan Lonette, Parschiv George, and Attlia Tuhos.

While George and Tuhos were arrested from the national Capital, Lonette was arrested from a hotel in Gurugram on Sunday.

“We got a tip-off that a key member of the Romanian gang involved in cyber crimes was present at a hotel in Gurugram. With support from the hotel staff, we were able to lay the trap and arrest the accused,” said a Gurugram Police official.

All three accused were on Tuesday produced in a district court in Gurugram, after which they were taken into custody by Chandigarh Police.

Law enforcement officials are now searching for the kingpin, identified as Paul Sorin, who is still at large.

The arrest of the Romanian cyber criminals is a pretty significant development for Gurugram police, as they tackle rising incidents of cyber fraud.

Officials said not only was the gang involved in stealing money from banks by cloning their debit cards, but the accused also sold information of users to other parties.

They also stated that gang was active not only in Chandigarh and Delhi-ncr, but also in Kolkata.

Theft through cloning of credit/debit cards and data thefts are the most common complaints received by the Cyber Crime branch of Gurugram Police.

Sources in Cyber Crime branch state that most cyber criminals do not belong to Gurugram. As a result, they rely on unscrupulous or care

less employees of banks and credit card companies to get customer information.

The officials in the Cyber Crime branch highlighted that contractual employees, new employees and insurance agents are the most common sources from which cyber criminals obtain vital customer information.

They further said that there are many peole who earn money by selling confidential information of residents living in city condominiums to cyber criminals, who exploit it to dupe unsuspecting residents.
