Drunken-driving: Over 1,000 challans issued

- PIYUSH OHRIE

GURUGRAM: Despite a strict stance taken by police, the incidents of drunken driving show no signs of abating in Gurugram. In an official figure shared by the Gurugram police this year, over 1,000 challans have already been issued to the offenders who have indulged in drunken driving. In 2017, there were over 6000 challans which were issued for the same act. Even after the deployment of policemen to improve the conditions at Mall Mile, the worse affected area where drunken drivers continue to pose a challenge to law and order situation is MG Road.

The dark side of Gurugram cops was recently exposed when they broke the window glasses of a car after stopping the driver who had consumed alcohol beyond the permissible limit. There have been incidents in the past when drunken drivers have been brazen enough of trying to mow down the cops when asked to stop. Not only the police personnel have to meet the challenge of drunken rash driving but also of the altercations by the drunken drivers that often have a long confrontation with the police officials when fined for the offence. During weekends, there are more than 20 fines that are issued daily against the drivers that consume alcohol beyond the permissible limits. Several drivers including rapper Rahul Yadav, popularly known as Fazilpuria, has been booked by the police for drunken driving.

There have been occasions where drunken drivers have even tried to physically harm the police officials. “Drunken driving is a major law and order challenge. Every weekend we do a vigorous surveillance and take strict action against these drivers. There are certain miscreants who try to create a ruckus and try to harm police officials. In such situation we deal with them as per law,” said Inspector Vikas Kaushik, SHO- Sector-29.
