Three cops rescue couple from building on fire

NEW DELHI: By forming a human chain, three brave personnel from central Delhi’s Paharganj police station on Wednesday saved the life of a couple who were trapped in a major fire in their building.

Police sources said that head constable Manoj Kumar, constable Sandeep and constable Amit took just five to ten minutes quickly take decisive action in a near impossible situation.

According to police, around 6 am on Wednesday, while the majority of the district staff was away on law and order duty on the occasion of Eid al-adha, the trio from Paharganj police station was on deployed near a mosque in the area, when they saw smoke coming from a nearby building.

They immediatel­y reached the spot and found that a fire had broken out at property number 3018, street number 1 in Chuna Mandi, Paharganj.

“We saw a woman hanging from the iron grill of the house and her husband cry- The three policemen during the rescue operation in Paharganj on Wednesday morning ing for help. We had very little time, so we entered the adjoining building and reached the fourth floor, where the room was closed. We broke open the lock of the adjacent building and went upstairs,” head constable Manoj Kumar told Millennium Post.

The three cops scaled the boundary of the building on fire and reached on the fourth floor where they fortunatel­y found a ladder.

While two of the brave cops held the ladder, the third climbed down it and stretched his hand to the woman Ganga Devi, who was stranded in her balcony, and pulled her up to safety.

The trio then proceeded to rescue her husband Balraj in the same way.

“There were only five to 10 minutes left as the blaze was gutting the house rapidly. There was no place to stand and the eleventh minute might have led casualty,” added Kumar.

Deputy Commission­er of Police (Central) Mandeep Singh Randhawa lauded the three men for their heroic act which saved the life of the couple.

“Their act is thoroughly commendabl­e. Later on, it was learnt that one person in the building had jumped to save himself and is undergoing treatment,” said the DCP.

The man in the hospital has been identified as Jitender
