MUZAFFARNAGAR: Five people have died and seven others taken ill at a village in Shamli district since Tuesday allegedly after consuming spurious liquor, police said on Wednesday.

After the incident was reported, five policemen -including Bidoli police outpost in-charge Sub-inspector KP Singh and four constables -were suspended for negligence in duty, police said.

Shamli Additional Superintendent of Police Shalok Kumar said the incident happened at Kamalpur village under Jhanjhana police station, which is near the Uttar Pradesh-haryana border.

While three deaths occurred on Tuesday, two persons died today, he said.

The seven people who fell ill allegedly after consuming the spurious liquor have been taken to different hospitals for treatment, but they are in serious condition, he said.

Police said that one of the deceased, 55-year-old Joga Singh, had supplied the alleged spurious liquor and had also himself consumed it.

A case has been registered against Singh and other unidentified vendors under various sections of Indian Penal Code, including 304A (causing death by negligence) and relevant sections of the Excise Act, they said.

Other deceased have been identified as Inderpal (50) Dharmpal (49), Raj Kumar (42) and Sanjay (35). MAHARAJGANJ (UP): Taking a serious view of alleged opposition by the principal and teachers of a ‘madrasa’ (Islamic seminary) to singing of the national anthem during Independence Day function, the Uttar Pradesh government has cancelled its recognition.

The recognition of Madrasa Arabia Ahle Girls College, situated in Badago area under Kolhui police station has been cancelled on the order of the state education department, official sources said.

District minority welfare officer Prabhat Kumar said the action was taken following a report of the inquiry committee set up by the administration to probe the allegations.

The principal of the madrasa Fazlal Rahman and some other teachers had reportedly stopped the students from singing the national anthem on Independence Day after unfurling of the tricolour.

The matter came to light when a video purportedly showing the principal stopping the students from singing the national anthem became viral on social media.

The police had swung into action and a case of treason was filed against three teachers of the madrasa and they were arrested.

District Magistrate Amarnath Upadhyay had ordered the district minority welfare officer to investigate the matter. After the investigation, the report was sent to the Bjp-led state government.

Sources said alternative arrangements will be made to accommodate the students of the seminary in some other institution.
