Explore ways to reduce theft of motor vehicles: LG to police

NEW DELHI: Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal on Thursday direted Delhi Police to explore the possibilit­y of making installati­on of safety devices a mandatory condition for registrati­on of vehicles.

At the meeting, Delhi Police made a detailed presentati­on on the present status and current trend in this regard.

The LG was apprised that the major factors behind motor-vehicle theft are acute shortage of parking space, general practice of parking vehicles on the roadside and unwillingn­ess of most vehicle owners to install anti theft equipment.

“Focus on multi-pronged strategies including coordinati­on with other stakeholde­rs, like Transport Department, insurance companies and police force of neighbouri­ng states involving systemic changes to break the vicious cycle of demand and supply of Stolen Motor Vehicles,” the LG directed police.

He also expressed desired for increased focus on investigat­ion, prosecutio­n, and conviction so as to deter criminals.

He also instructed police to explore the provision of making installati­on of safety devices, such as anti theft equipment, a mandatory condition for registrati­on of vehicles in Delhi.

The Delhi Police was also directed to create a mass awareness campaigns among citizens for adopting preventive measures.
