Renaming of Ramlila Maidan: BJP, North MCD deny claims

- ROUSHAN ALI

NEW DELHI: A fresh tussle has started between the Aam Aadmi Party-led Delhi government and the Bjp-ruled Municipal Corporations, this time over reports claiming the renaming of Ramlila Maidan to ‘Atal Maidan’.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday said that the proposed move by North Delhi Municipal Corporation (North MCD) to rename Ramlila Maidan will not fetch BJP votes, “but changing the name of the Prime Minister might.”

However, Delhi BJP leaders and North MCD officials denied reports of the renaming of Ramlila Maidan.

In a post on his official Twitter handle, the Chief Minister shared a tweet by a private Hindi news channel reporting that the Ramlila Maidan in the heart of Delhi could be renamed as Atal Bihari Vajpayee Maidan, and that North MCD would discuss the proposal on August 30.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal shared a tweet by a private Hindi news channel which reported that Ramlila Maidan could be renamed as Atal Bihari Vajpayee Maidan, and that North MCD would discuss a proposal on August 30

“Such a move won’t get the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) any votes, the Aam Aadmi Party leader said,” Kejriwal tweeted.

“Instead, the BJP should try changing the name of the Prime Minister. Maybe then they could get some votes because now people are not voting for (Narendra Modi),” the AAP national convenor further tweeted.

However, an interview with another news channel, Delhi BJP president Manoj Tiwari said that the reports are “completely baseless.”

“I have no idea where the news emerged from, but we can never change the name of the Ramlila Maidan. All such reports are completely baseless,” he said.

Moreover, North MCD ward commissioner Jayprakash also denied the reports, saying that “NDMC never held a meeting or presented a proposal to rename the Ramlila ground.”

Additionally, Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly Vijender Gupta said that AAP is getting overexcited over an issue that never even existed.

“There was never a proposal to rename the Maidan. No meeting was held, and no one even suggested it, so why is the Aam Aadmi Party overly excited,” Gupta, the BJP legislator from Rohini Assembly constituency, said.
