Tau Devi Lal, Nehru stadiums to be renovated by GMDA

GURUGRAM: To promote and improve the sporting culture in the district, Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) will take over the task of revamping the city’s two stadiums, the Tau Devi Lal Stadium and Nehru stadium.

The agency will soon float tenders for companies to revamp the stadiums. There are also plans to create facilities and add new equipment for gymnasts. For long, there have been complaints about the absence of addition of new sports facilities, as well as deterioration of existing basic services.

Nehru Stadium, the oldest stadium in the city, lies in a state of neglect even as plans to refurbish it have been stuck in bureaucratic red tape for over two years.

The situation is no better for Tau Devi Lal Stadium too. Though major events, such as celebration of the state’s 50th birthday, are organised in the stadium, sportspersons say that dearth of basic sporting facilities has prevented any major sporting event from being held.

Built in 2000, Tau Devi Lal stadium was slated to be a state-of-the-art stadium that could host national as well as international events. However, utter neglect by officials has led to serious deterioration of the stadium.

Besides revamping the two stadiums, the GMDA also plans to set up Olympic-size swimming pools.
