DNA sample reports for crime against women, POCSO cases in 30 days: FSL

- SAYANTAN GHOSH

NEW DELHI: The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) at Rohini has started providing reports of DNA samples in cases of crimes against women and those registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act, within one month.

The information was given to Delhi Home Minister Satyender Jain by the director of FSL at a review meeting on the functioning of the laboratory on Monday.

Earlier, Jain had directed FSL to provide DNA sample reports in such cases in 30 days.

“As per the direction of the Delhi Home Minister, this Laboratory has brought down the pendency of DNA Unit and subsequently made a regular cycle to dispose off the DNA cases within one month pertaining to crimes against women and cases under POCSO,” stated the Crime Scene Management Division of the FSL in its report submitted to the minister.

The mobile units are essential for quick responses and instant collection of exhibits and evidence. These units function round the clock to reduce any chances of the destruction of evidence due to delay.

In 2017, 488 crime scenes were registered in the FSL, for which 1,212 forensic teams were deputed to the scenes of crime round the clock.

It was reiterated that the government is extremely sensitive about crimes against women, since the Capital reports a higher rate of crimes against women and girls.

In such cases, the laboratory is providing the forensic reports/inputs at the earliest.

Welcoming the step, Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Swati Maliwal on Monday tweeted, “This is excellent. Delhi Govt ensures FSL reports within 1 month in POCSO cases. Will go a long way in achieving target of conviction within 6 months!”
