NEW DELHI: Preparation for the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) election campaign have kicked off, with Chattra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS), the student wing of Aam Aadmi Party, on Monday organising a students’ rights rally titled ‘Badlav Yatra’.

Scores of students participated in the rally, demanding concession in Delhi Metro passes, construction of new colleges and new hostels.

The rally proceeded through the Faculty of Law, as well as North Campus colleges including Hindu, St Stephen’s, Kirori Mal, Hansraj, Daulat Ram, Shri Ram College of Commerce, Miranda House, SGTB Khalsa, and concluded at the Faculty of Arts.

Hariom Prabhakar, secretary, CYSS, said, “The Badlav Yatra was a success. Large number of students joined to support us. They want candidates without muscle power and money to come to power. Someone like them, who can address common student issues,”

Meanwhile, the Congress-affiliated student body National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) released its election manifesto for the DUSU polls, slated for September 12.

The manifesto promised to fight to get an ‘Institution of Eminence’ (IOE) tag for DU, a Rs 10 food-plate in canteens, a programme to spot and groom 100 women leaders from the varsity, constitution of a ‘Students Rights Commission’ on the lines of women and minority commissions; and free laptops for DU students.

“The ‘Institution of Eminence’ tag will bring an extra Rs 1,000 crore budget, which can be used for better infrastructure,” NSUI national in-charge Ruchi Gupta told reporters.

Fairoz Khan, national president, NSUI, said they will spot potential women leaders, who will be mentored by former Chief Minister Sheila Dixit.

The last date to file nominations is September 4.
