Over 350 cases of cruelty against animals since 2016

NEW DELHI: Cases of animal cruelty are not new in the city. However, since 2016, a staggering 354 such cases have been reported in Delhi, with 12 dogs being found dead in three cases in Dwarka.

According to the NGO People for Animals (PFA), animals are a very soft target and harassed regularly. Delhi Police data accessed by Millennium Post about cases filed under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act states that in 2016, as many as 46 cases were registered. In 2017, the number was 39, while till August 23 this year, Delhi Police has registered 32 cases.

According to police, the accused in such cases are either animal haters or suffer from serious mental health issues. In 2016, a man was arrested for stabbing dogs to death in south Delhi’s Green Park, with sources claiming he was suffering from depression.

Moreover, under Section 429 (mischief by killing or maiming cattle, etc, of any value or any animal of the value of fifty rupees) of the Indian Penal Code, as many as 237 cases have been filed since 2016.

As per the data, in 2016, cops received 84 such cases, while last year the number declined to 73. However, till August 23 this year, around 80 cases have been reported.

Recently, 15 oxen were found dead inside a truck container in Vasant Kunj area.

“There are several cases where cattle are transporte­d from one place to another in a very hazardous manner. We are against such illegal activities,” Sourav Gupta from PFA said.

He also cited several cases where dogs have been attacked by tailors or small shopkeeper­s have thrown hot milk on dogs and puppies and causing them serious harm.

The post-mortem report of the seven dogs who were found dead in Dwarka Sector-23 earlier this month revealed that the cause of death to be “respirator­y arrest due to hypodermic shock, and external lacerated injury around the abdominal region including neck”.

Meanwhile, the post-mortem report in another case where three dogs were found dead in Dwarka Sector-19, doctor found that death was caused due to some toxic material. Late Monday night, two more dogs were found dead in the area.
