NEW DELHI: Delhi Police have arrested a woman for murdering her own sevenmonth-old daughter.

Cops on Saturday said the woman, identified as Adiba, a resident of Hazrat Nizamuddin, murdered her daughter as she thought she brought illness and misfortune to the family.

Sources say that the woman had earlier been admitted to Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences for some mental ailment and that she also attempted suicide sometime back.

Detailing the incident, sources said that on August 20, the seven-month-old child was brought to the hospital, but doctors declared her brought dead on arrival.

On observation of the dead body, the noticed that neck of the baby had suspicious marks in the front. The body was shifted to the AIIMS mortu- ary for post-mortem

During enquiry, the parents stated that the girl had accidentally drowned in a water bucket at their residence.

However, on August 27, the post-mortem report was received, stating the cause of death to be “fatal pressure over the neck.” After perusing the report, a murder case was registered and the family questioned.

During investigation, cops found out that the girl had been killed by her mother Adiba, who had got married to a tailor around 18 months ago.

“On the day of incident, no one was present at her home and the deceased child was sleeping. Adiba strangulated her neck with the help of dupatta and killed the child. After that, she put deceased child’s body in the bucket of water to show her death as drowning,” said Chinmoy Biswal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East).
