142 spots in Dwarka lack proper lighting

- ABHAY SINGH

NEW DELHI: Darkness still haunts several parts of the national Capital, as recent data by Delhi Police has claimed that around 142 stretches in Dwarka district are still poorly illuminated. After finding the spots, police have written to concerned agencies to light up streets to ensure safety of residents.

Data accessed by Millennium Post shows that of the 142 areas, 12 dark stretches are in Dwarka’s Sector-23, including areas near Metro stations.

In Dwarka North, there are 26 dark spots, including some in sectors 4 and 12. In Dwarka South, there are over 30 dark spots. Ten dark stretches are in Dabri, while six are in nearby Uttam Nagar area.

Nine places in Bindapur were found to have poor lighting, while 26 spots in Chhawla and Jafarpur Kalan still await proper lighting system. Moreover, 18 places in Najafgarh and Baba Haridas Nagar are still in the dark.

Last year, the city police reported to have discovered more than 90 dark stretches, 36 of these located in the Dwarka sub-division, 21 from Dabri sub-division and 23 in Chhawla.

Sources in Delhi Police claimed that as soon as they find such stretches, they regularly write to the concerned agencies asking them to make necessary arrangements to illuminate the dark spots and to repair the improperly functioning street lights.

Investigating agencies also told the concerned power companies to rectify any and all faults, in the interest of the safety and security of the general public and for avoiding any untoward incident.

Moreover, the Dwarka district police has put into force Jaguar patrolling teams to rein in untoward incidents in dark stretches.

Dark spots are dangerous for people who travel late at night from their office to home or other places.

Criminals often exploit poorly-lit areas to commit crimes, as no one can usually see them and they can easily flee with minimal risk of getting caught.

With criminals using new modus operandi in every other case, the Dwarka district police is regularly undertaking surprise picket inspections, which have yielded fruit in the form of arrest of several criminals.
