Motinagar Sewer death: Director of firm among two persons arrested

NEW DELHI: A week after five men were suffocated to death inside a sewer treatment plant at the residentia­l complex in Motinagar, the city police arrested two persons including a director from Delhi and supervisor from Uttar Pradesh area.

Police claimed that they have received few documents related to the incident after they issued notice to the concerned companies.

Deputy Commission­er of Police (West) Monika Bharadwaj confirmed the arrest and claimed that the investigat­ion is going on from all angles.

According to police, the accused identified as Digambar, the supervisor and was arrested from Uttar Pradesh.

Police teams conducted several raids to nab the culprit who has been absconding since the incident took place.

Sources claimed that during the probe his location was found near Aligarh area.

The other accused identified as Pravin is the director of the firm Unnati, under whom few of the deceased were working.

Police sources claimed that the accused Digambar had forced the five victims to go inside the sewer plant but when they denied, the accused shouted at him and threatened to oust them from their jobs.

Meanwhile, police team sent notices to several companies for submitting documents including the contract details of the deceased and the firms in sewer maintenanc­e.

"Few documents were submitted by the company," said a police officer.

On September 9, five persons died after they went inside for the maintenanc­e of sewage treatment plant in West Delhi's Moti Nagar area.

The deceased were identified as Sarfaraz, Pankaj, Raja, Umesh and Vishal.

Sources claimed that initial investigat­ion revealed that the maintenanc­e of the building had been given to a private company, who further divided the work into five to six agencies.

A case under IPC sections 7 & 9 of Prohibitio­n of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilita­tion Act 2013, Sec. 3(1)(j) & 3(2) (v) of The Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act has been registered
