Water meters stolen from DJB, sold for just Rs 50

NEW DELHI: A juvenile was apprehende­d for his involvemen­t in stealing more than 280 water meters from a godown of Delhi Jal Board in south-east Delhi. Police claimed that they have also arrested a receiver of stolen property in this case.

The receiver was identified as Ikram (22), a resident of Jangpura Extension and from his possession 10 stolen water meters were also recovered. Further, one juvenile has also been apprehende­d for theft of the water meters.

Police claimed that on September 11, a complaint was received from Suresh Bhardwaj, who is a Project Coordinato­r at SPML, Delhi Jal Board Water Meter Project.

On the basis of intelligen­ce gathered on September 13, one Child in Conflict with Law (CCL) was apprehende­d from Lodhi Flyover. He disclosed that he along with his two other juvenile associates had stolen water meters from Delhi Jal Board godown and had sold these meters to a junk dealer in Bhogal. He also disclosed that he had stolen these meters in different days by entering in godown through air vent with the help of two other juveniles.

On the instance of CCL, Ikram was arrested. Deputy Commission­er of Police (South East) Chinmoy Biswal stated that CCL disclosed that he is a vagabond and addicted to liquor and in order to meet their needs they started petty thefts. "They had sold these meters for Rs. 50 each to Ikram. However, only 2000 rupees were received by them yet and Ikram had promised to give the pending money after the sale of the water meters," said the DCP. Accused Ikram had further given the meters to Rahim for sale.
