Mass protest on Sep 25 over death of manual scanvenger­s

NEW DELHI: Citizens of the Capital, along with people from all over the country, will gather in a mega-protest on September 25 against the death of 11 manual scavengers here.

The launch of the protest took place on Tuesday in Delhi, which will witness a week-long campaign.

“We have approached the government to make plans and implement those for these poor people. But the government­s have not done anything. The blame game politics should stop. That is why today we want to reach out to the common people regarding the issues and that's why they make a protest on September 25“said Bezwada Wilson, national convenor, Safai Karamchari Andolan.

He added that here the government has blamed the private companies for hiring manual scavengers. “But being the government, they should take responsibi­lity of these people. Giving compensati­on is not enough despite the ban the government­s should try to find out that why such work is going on. I think the main problem is That the government­s do not admit or understand that these deaths are not natural,” Wilson added.

On September 25, people from all over India will gather at the Jantar month are for the mega protest.

This will include people who work as manual scavengers, citizens, NGOS, activists, politician­s and many more.

On Monday, the Delhi government had announced compensati­on for the families of victims. Delhi Social wselfare Minister Rajendra Pal Gautam also said that the government is making a committee to monitor the problems of this death and the Delhi government is totally against manual scavenging.
