NEW DELHI: Some cheats are so meticulous in their planning that they leave no room for doubts. When some unemployed youth were called for an interview allegedly by ONGC, they never suspected it to be a trap as they were interviewed at Krishi Bhawan.

On Tuesday, the Crime Branch of Delhi Police said it busted a gang which duped innocent people on the pretext of getting them jobs in ONGC as assistant engineers.

Seven men have been arrested, including the main accused Kumal Kishore alias Randhir Singh.

Police said that the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) had filed a complaint at Police Station Vasant Kunj (North), after which a case was registered and investigation of the case handed to Crime Branch.

“The victims were introduced to a man named Randhir Singh alias Kunal Kishore who took Rs 22 lakh from the victims for getting them jobs in ONGC. But later on, all the contacts of Randhir Singh went off the radar. The revelations made by the victims pointed towards a highly organised cheating syndicate,” said Bhism Singh, DCP (Crime).

Technical investigation became difficult as the accused were well acquainted with modern technology and did not use the mobile phones to make any personal calls. They then disposed off the cells after the required duration.

Consequently, police traced cab bookings, hotel reservations and online shopping done by the accused using their mobile phones. Soon, they zeroed in on a IP address which led them to an office in Laxmi Nagar being run by Singh, the prime accused.

The accused used to call candidates chosen by another accused Ravi Chandra, who used to introduced them to the former. Singh then prepared fake call letters with the help of a web designer Wasim and called them for an interview at Krishi Bhawan.

A software engineer Vishal Goel faked ONGC website, while Jagdish Raj, an employee in the Ministry of Rural Development, would arrange the office of any such officer who was on leave at Krishi Bhawan and his other associate Sandeep Kumar ensured the entry of victims.

Others involved were identified as Suman Saurabh and Ankit Gupta, who posed as

employees of ONGC and conducted a fake interview of the candidates and collected lakhs of rupees.
