NEW DELHI: In a first-of-itskind incident, the Delhi Police have arrested a husband-wife duo for committing a series of snatching in south east Delhi.

Senior police officials on Wednesday said that the wife used to sit as the pillion while her husband rode the motorcycle, and the two would regularly snatch mobile phones from passesrby on the road.

The woman has been identified as 20-year-old Sonia and her husband as 24-yearold Vikram, both residents of Navjeevan camp area in Govindpuri.

Sonia also used to ensure a safe passage for them, as the cops used to not pay much attention on bike with a female pillion.

The case came to light after a man’s mobile was snatched by a female pillion rider on Tuesday in Govindpuri area.

He soon raised an alarm and it caught the attention of the patrolling staff, after which they were chased and intercepted. Cops were surprised to see a female pillion rider as the main snatcher, and found them to be very young.

Cops said that the couple had committed numerous snatchings, and their modus operandi comprised of first stealing a bike and then riding it on the roads in search of potential targets.

During sustained interrogation, Vikram disclosed that he used to work as a bus cleaner and in his early days, he became addicted to liquor and ganja.

In order to meet his needs, he soon resorted to theft and snatching. He had previously been arrested in nine cases of snatching and theft.

Soon, he met his wife-tobe Sonia in his neighbourhood and fell in love with her. The two got married seven months ago and embarked on a journey of crime.

“Accused Vikram used to ride the stolen bike and his wife used to snatch the mobile phones from the pedestrians. The accused used to dispose of the stolen bikes and snatched phones to receivers and passersby respectively.

“With the arrest of the accused persons, eight cases of snatching and theft have been solved,” Depity Commissioner of Police (South East) Chinmoy Biwal said.

They started committing snatchings as they thought the presence of a girl will deter police and erase suspicion, even if they are seen in CCTV footage or stopped at a checkpoint.
