Assault on LNJP doctor: Jain directs action within 12 hrs

NEW DELHI: In the wake of the recent assault on Dr Kareem in the emergency ward of LNJP Hospital, representa­tives of the United Resident Doctors Associatio­n (URDA), as well as Dr Kareem himself, met Delhi Health Minister Satyender Jain on Wednesday and appraised him of problems they face in hospitals.

The minister assured the resident doctors of various preventive measures, including deployment of adequate security guards and immediate action to stop violence against doctors.

The doctors presented to the minister a charter of demands to improve the working conditions.

Taking note of their problems, Jain instructed the director of the hospital to take strict legal action in the Dr Kareem assault case within 12 hours.

The minister also informed the doctors about recruitmen­t of more doctors to improve the doctor-patient ratio in Delhi and achieve a reduction in the workload on doctors.

He was quoted as saying that such assaults can be prevented if there would be conviction­s in cases of assaults.

Moreover, URDA joint secretary Dr Saurav Awasthi stated that the minister assured immediate action against culprits who assault doctors and to strengthen security measures in all hospitals.

“Issues such as pathetic working conditions of resident doctors and ways to improve these, overcrowdi­ng of tertiary care hospitals, role of polyclinic­s in managing the huge load of general patients, proposed project to bring in more PG/ DNB seats, sensitisat­ion of hospital administra­tion and police to issues of resident doctors were discussed with the Health Minister,” added Dr Awasthi.
