Development in East Delhi AAP’S poll plank for 2019: Atishi

- SAYANTAN GHOSH

NEW DELHI: The upcoming 2019 general election will see the Aam Aadmi Party fight from the East Delhi constituency on the basis of development works in the education and health sectors, said AAP prabhari for East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency Atishi.

“In terms of development, East Delhi has been neglected by the earlier governments. But after coming to power, our party has done educational development in East Delhi in a large way,” Atishi told Millennium Post.

Atishi was key to the educational development undertaken by the AAP government and also served as advisor to Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia.

However, a few months earlier, the Centre removed her from the position as Sisodia’s advisor, on the grounds that her appointment was illegal. She notably worked for the AAP government for an honorarium of one rupee per month, before she was removed in April 2018.

“We have done many developments in East Delhi. We have two out of five schools of excellence in East Delhi. We are also working for a super-specialty hospital in this area. We also set up a new campus of Delhi Technological University here and the second one will also be built soon,” said Atishi.

She added that AAP in Delhi will campaign on the basis of its work done and the party does not want to divert its focus to any other issues.

“We have a strong cadre base in Delhi and have a lot of youth support, which will work for us. The people of Delhi have also seen the kind of obstruction the Centre is causing for us by not allowing the Chief Minister to work,” she said.

East Delhi is one of the largest and highly-populated Lok Sabha constituencies not only in Delhi but all over India.

The constituency covers areas east of the Yamuna, including Seelampur, Shahdara, Gandhi Nagar and Preet Vihar. The current MP from East Delhi is BJP’S Maheish Girri.

In 2014, Rajmohan Gandhi fought from AAP and got around 31 per cent of the votes, compared to Girri’s 48 per cent.

Former Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit’s son Sandeep contested for Congress from this seat in 2014 and previously been a two-time been MP from this seat in 2004 and 2009.
