NEW DELHI: After timely action by personnel of Govindpuri police station saved a man who was grievously injured from being stabbed by a liquor bottle, diligent police work led to the arrest of the accused who was identified after voters list of two different areas were scanned.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East) Chinmoy Biswal on Sunday said that on October 6, Assistant SubInspector Ajit Singh of Govindpuri police station was on night patrolling on his motorcycle.

"During patrolling, at about 11 pm, he reached near Pocket 4, Kalkaji Extension, where he saw a person lying behind parked cars in an isolated dark spot," said the DCP.

He added that Ajit stopped his bike and rush to the injured man, and found him bleeding profusely with injuries in his neck and head. Ajit immediately gave the man first-aid and tried to stop the bleeding in his neck. He also called his SHO Kuldeep Singh, who rushed to the spot and shifted the victim to AIIMS Trauma Centre using the station's ERV vehicle.

Biswal said that on the way to the hospital, the dizzy victim told the two cops his name is Jayant Haldar and one Kabir assaulted him.

At the hospital, doctors said that if there had been a delay of five more minutes, it would have been near impossible to save Jayant's life.

During investigation, a broken liquor bottle with blood stains was collected at the spot where Jayant was found and a crime team took fingerprints from it.

The name Kabir was searched from the list of known criminals at Govindpuri police station, but to no avail.

Soon, constable Harvinder decided to scan the voters list of Govindpuri and Kalkaji areas. Finally, thorough scrutiny of the lists revealed the name of one Kabir, a resident of Kalkaji, who was brought in.

On being interrogated, Kabir revealed that he and Jayant were consuming liquor together, after which they had an altercation. During this, Kabir picked up a liquor bottle and hit Jayant on the head.

Using one of the broken pieces, Kabir slashed Jayant's throat and went home, leaving behind Jayant to die.
