GURUGRAM: A tough test awaits Gurugram Police on Wednesday, as voting for student union elections will be held in all university across Haryana, after a gap of 22 years.

Amidst the challenges waiting to cause trouble for the cops include the student wings of different opposition parties in the state, who had called for boycott of the elections.

Though no violent incidents in connection with the polls have occurred in Gurugram, student-police clashes have been reported from parts of Kurukshetra and Rohtak districts.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has already sent a notice to the state government stating that the latter holds the right to cancel the elections.

Gurugram will be under the spotlight on Wednesday’s elections, as 12 colleges are located in Gurugram city itself. Not only does is it home to a large number of students studying in colleges, it’s proximity to the national capital also makes Gurugram politically significant.

The elections are being held just a few months before the 2019 general elections, which will be followed by the Assembly elections.

There are a total of 18 universities and more than five lakh students in higher educational institutions in Haryana.

Among the issues plaguing the higher educational institutions in Haryana are shortage of courses, security of female students and poor infrastructure.

Though Gurugram is the richest district in the state, as far as higher education is concerned, there is not much that the district administration can boast of.

Owing to its proximity to Delhi, most students from Gurugram list studying Delhi University as their first preference, even if they do not secure admission in top North Campus colleges.

Even last year, a clash between two student groups of a college was resolved after two days of intervention. Student union elections in Haryana were last held in 1996, but were marred by large-scale violence.
