Man mowed down while crossing rly track in Gzb

Five others injured while trying to cross the closed Kot Gaon railway crossing in Chipyana village of Ghaziabad on Tuesday

GHAZIABAD: A middle-aged man was killed while five others critically injured after they were hit by a train when they tried to cross the railway track at Kot Gaon railway crossing in Chipyana village of Ghaziabad on Tuesday morning.

Police said the incident occurred at around 8.30 am on the Aligarh-moradabad railway line. A senior police official said they are yet to identify the deceased person, while the injured were identified as Mehandi (53), Kalu, Lucky Bhandari, Surya Kant and Nishant.

Cops said that at least six persons, riding on a scooter and cycles, were crossing the tracks even as the level crossing was closed for traffic.

“Two trains, an electric multiple unit (EMU) coming from Dankaur and the DelhiKalka Express, were passing each other on opposite sides. A man on a scooter man and others were entangled between the both railway lines and the

scooter was hit by one of the train engines. The scooter rider died on the spot, while five persons were critically injured,” said Rameshwar Singh, station house officer, Vijay Nagar police station, Ghaziabad.

The officer added that the deceased has yet been identified, while family members of the injured were informed.

“Prima facie, it appears that the group tried to allegedly tried to cross the railway line when the level crossing was closed. Post-mortem of the

person who was killed in the incident has been performed. The body is being kept in the mortuary to identify him.

“Meanwhile, all the victims were taken up by their families, two of them were critically injured and were referred to GTB Hospital in Delhi. Others are under treatment in local hospitals. The matter is under investigat­ion,” added Singh.

Meanwhile, Railway officials said that the crossing had been closed for traffic movement for 24 hours, due to constructi­on of an rail-over bridge at dhobhi ghat.

However, officials added that locals often cross from under the bars with their vehicles to reach the other side.

“It is difficult to stop people from crossing these tracks and even fines and other penalties do not deter them. While footover-bridges have been provided, they are at the railway station and people tend not to use them,” said a senior official of the Government Railway Police.
