DCPCR urges parents to interact with children on daily basis

NEW DELHI: “Spend at least some time with your children at home to know whether any stranger or known person is coming closer to them showing more affection or care,” the following point is a part of an awareness programme which Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR) is telling mothers living in different parts of city. It is a bid by the child rights body to save the children getting harassed by anti-social elements in society.

The brain behind the initiative is DCPCR member Anurag Kundu, who told Millennium Post that there should be a regular dialogue between children and parents in which the kids can share thoughts and other details with their parents. “It will strengthen the bond of relationship between children and parents. We have planned 30 workshops in which we have completed three,” said Anurag Kundu. More than 400 mothers and children attended the workshops organised by the commission in different government schools.

In one of the workshops, Jyoti Duhan Rathee, member of the child rights body, told mothers to give at least 10 minutes to their children every day and ask about the overall daily routine. “If a child talks about some known person (neighbour, school staff) or stranger showing affection, giving them chocolate, seeking friendship this is the time when parents should check that person,” said Jyoti.

She further added that the mothers are close to children so they should make an environment in which the kids can share everything with the mothers instead of discussing it with any third person. The recent DCPCR data stated that 42 per cent of the accused in the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) Act cases were neighbours of the children.
