Gurugram’s elderly an easy target for anti-social elements

GURUGRAM: Many elderly persons in Gurugram live a life of loneliness and insecurity, with almost no one to look after their well-being.

Saturday night’s incident where a couple was found dead in their residence in the posh DLF Phase-ii area only stoked these fears.

Police said they had found 72-year-old Gurmehar Kaur with her throat slit and her husband, 76-year-old Harnek Singh Dhillon, with deep cuts on his wrists inside their residence.

While Kaur succumbed to in the hospital, Singh is receiving treatment at a private hospital.

According to law enforcement officials, the case seems to be a double suicide as a note was retrieved from the couple’s residence.

However, police have not yet ruled out the possibility that some known persons tried to murder the couple over an ongoing property dispute in the family.

There are claims that for some days, the couple’s residence was being regularly surveyed by a man on a scooter.

Meanwhile, the couple’s son, who resides in Australia, and daughter, who resides in Canada, have been informed.

There have been various cases in the past where burglars have not only targeted houses where elderly couples reside, but even mercilessly beaten some of the couples on some occasions.

The worst example of this dangerous trend was seen last year when an elderly widow was murdered brutally by burglars in her house in Sushant Lok area.

When her son, an NRI, he did not receive any response from the woman after multiple calls, he asked a relative to check on her, which led to the unraveling of the heinous murder.

There are several senior citizens and elderly couples in Gurugram whose children live abroad. For security purposes, some of these couples have hired private security professionals.

Moreover, clubs for the elderly have sprouted in the city, which are seeing a healthy rise in their membership, as they provide their patrons with much needed company and a sense of camaraderie.
