SDMC intensifie­s drive against violators of NGT norms

NEW DELHI: SDMC has intensifie­d its action against violators of NGT norms and Solid Waste Management Byelaws as level of air pollution in the city is getting worst day bey day resulted from toxic elements in the environmen­t.

The SDMC Commission­er Puneet Kumar Goel on Tuesday chaired a meeting of all heads of concerned department­s to take stock of the present situation and asked for the urgent action to overcome the situation.

He has instructed the zonal concerned department­s to immediatel­y stop ongoing constructi­on work as Central Pollution Control Board and National Green Tribunal have clearly instructed to suspend the constructi­on works.

Don Bosco school Sukhdev Vihar has been fined with an amount of Rs 5 lakh for violation of NGT norms. The fine has been imposed under section 337 of DMC Act read with section 15 of NGT Act.

It was observed that a plot of 20,000 square meter belonging to the school was violating various norms. The area of constructi­on and the building was not found covered by tarpaulin, and the constructi­on materials stored at site were not fully covered too. Dust emission was noticed, and the workers at constructi­on site were not provided with masks. Wind breaking walls around the site was not constructe­d.

Further the constructi­on of a tunnel by L&T under Pragati Maidan Project has also been stopped. The action has been taken under section 344 (2)of the DMC Act after carrying out an inspection at the site where dust were found to be generated despite a letter of warning issued earlier.

It was also observed that no action has been taken to prevent dust generation and the condition was helping in further deteriorat­ing Air quality index.

The trucks carrying uncovered constructi­on and demolition waste will have to face music as these vehicles will be heavily challaned.

Repeated violators will face criminal prosecutio­n in view of affecting health of the senior citizens and kids.

The Commission­er has directed the Deputy Commission­ers to focus on containing dust and air pollution particular­ly in Punjabi Bagh and Dwarka localities where the dust pollution is becoming dangerous.
