President hails sacrifice of soldiers from Himachal at HPU convocation
SHIMLA: President Ram Nath Kovind lauded the contributions of Himachal Pradesh to the country by sending its gallant soldiers to the defence forces, holding that percentage of its jawans in the army, was much higher than many other states.
“Himachal Pradesh has a proud distinction for contributions and supreme sacrifices of its gallant soldiers. Looking at country’s total population, it stands out for having a highest percentage of soldiers in the Indian army. They have also received four Paramvir Chakras. I, as supreme commander of the forces, express my deepest gratitude for their sacrifices and contributions for the country,“said Kovind while addressing the 24th convocation ceremony of Himachal Pradesh University, held here on Tuesday.
Earlier, he also awarded gold medals to eleven meritorious students of the University. The President congratulated the medal recipients and wished for their prosperous and bright future. He presented gold medals to Deepika Sharma, Kiran Sharma, Sheetal Verma, Renu Devi, Sakshi, Shailja Thakur, Chinta Devi, Akshita Thakur, Kritika Sharma and Archa. He also conferred PHD degree to Akshya Kumar.
As many as 230 gold medals
and 180 PHD degrees were awarded to meritorious students on the occasion.
In his address President setout a target for the Himachal Pradesh university to make its name among top 20 ‘institutes of eminence‘ in the country as soon it will be completing its 50 years .The University has already been granted Grade-a by NAAC. It also happens to be first model disabled friendly university.
Presiding over the function, Governor Acharya Devvrat said India remained ‘Vishva Guru’ in the field of education, where students from all over the world used to come for studying in renowned educational centres like Nalanda and Takshsheela.
Expressing concern over the declining moral values in the present society, the Governor said if teachers, police and politicians work with more honestly and dedication, the reform could be brought in the society for sure.
CM Jai Ram Thakur said his government was committed to providing quality education to the students in the state by strengthening the existing infrastructure. He said the motto of the government was to make Himachal Pradesh an ‘Education Hub’ of the country.
Some of the alumni of the university include ex-afghanistan President Hamid Karzai, Acting Chief Justice of Uttrakhand HC Justice Rajiv Sharma, seven sitting judges of Himachal Pradesh HC and leading sports figures like Charanjit Singh and Suman Rawat Mehta.
