NEW DELHI: The much awaited 17.8 km-long Shiv Vihar–trilokpuri Sanjay Lake section of the 59-km long Pink Line of Delhi Metro was thrown open to the public on Wednesday. The section will provide connectivity to important parts of North Eastern zone of Delhi.

“Delhi Metro will be running 4,749 trips a day,” a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation official said.

The section, a part of Delhi Metro’s Phase-iii, was jointly flagged off by Minister of State (Independent) Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Puri and Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on morning Wednesday. Passenger services on this section commenced later at 2 pm.

“The Trilokpuri Sanjay Lake– Shiv Vihar section of Pink Line will greatly benefit residents of east and northern Delhi. Residents of neighbouring Ghaziabad will also be immensely benefited,” said Puri.

“The Delhi Metro is indeed

scripting history this year. In 2018, the Metro has opened over 80 km of new sections. This in itself is a tremendous achievement.

“The journey that started in 2002 has passed the 300 km-mark to reach 314 km. The Metro project in Delhi is a global success,” he said.

Applauding Delhi Metro for opening of the section, Sisodia said, “We see the wonders of civil engineering in Delhi Metro. In a city like Delhi, it is a wonder how the Metro has expanded through areas such as Chandni Chowk.”

Attending the programme also was DMRC Managing Mirector Mangu Singh, who said that the section was going to be the first ever in the eastern part of the Capital.

He also informed that Delhi Metro was nearing completion of work on all other major corridors of Phase III and those sections would be opened in the coming months.

All 15 stations on this section are elevated, namely Trilokpuri Sanjay Lake, East Vinod Nagar-Mayur Vihar-ii, Mandawali- West Vinod Nagar, IP Extension, Anand Vihar ISBT, Karkardooma, Karkardooma Court, Krishna Nagar, East Azad Nagar, Welcome, Jaffrabad, Maujpur-babarpur, Gokulpuri, Johri Enclave and Shiv Vihar.

Commuters were elated as the beginning of operations on this section will lead to reduction of fares on multiple routes in the network.

“For commuters traveling from Dilshad Garden to Vaishali, Kaushambi, Anand Vihar, Karkarduma, Preet Vihar and Nirman Vihar, there will be a reduction of Rs 20 per trip,” said a Naveen Kumar, a Metro passenger.

He added that passengers will have reduction in fares to many of theses stations from Shahdara and Welcome as well.
