Security heightened in capital after Sri Lanka bomb blasts

According to police, checkings are going on in the bordering areas of the city

NEW DELHI: Delhi Police have heightened the security in the city after a series of eight devastating bomb blasts ripped through high-end hotels and churches holding Easter services in Sri Lanka on Sunday, killing at least 207 people.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Madhur Verma told that they have heightened the security and checking are going on around the city.

"As it was Easter today, security was already tight in the city including all churches and after the attack in Sri Lanka, the security has been increased," said DCP New Delhi.

According to police, checking are going on in the bordering areas of the city to avert any untoward incident.

The Delhi Police Commissioner in a crime review meeting takes stock of security cover CHIEF SECURITY in all 15 districts in the city.

Sources claimed that till April, as many as 3,026 malls and markets, 4,875 buildings/ hotels and more than 4,000 other places which include VIP areas, Iconic places were checked.

The city police have registered more than 40 cases against guest houses and hotels and 30 cases against cyber cafes.

All of them were found involved in neglecting police orders on safety and security.

The city police also briefed their members, who are working under ‘Public As Eyes and Ears of the Police' scheme, to inform them if they saw any suspicious things happening in the city.

Sources told

that there are more than 17,000 local people who are enrolled as members of 'Public As Eyes and Ears of the Police' scheme.

Till February 24, around 26 criminal cases in East Delhi were solved with the help of members enrolled in the scheme whereas around 10 cases in North West district were solved with the help of common persons after they provided crucial information leading to the arrest of the accused.

Delhi Police has launched a scheme captioned 'Public As Eyes and Ears of the Police' with special emphasis to sensitize all the stakeholders such as Rehri Patriwalas, Chowkidars, guards, vendors, parking attendants TSR drivers, residents/ traders welfare associations etc, to keep a watch and look for suspicious persons and share the information with local police immediately.

Blasts rocked Sri Lanka on early Sunday morning. The first six blasts hit three churches and three five-star hotels during Easter mass.
