NEW DELHI: A 44-year-old businessman was shot dead by two unidentified armed assailants in North East Delhi's Jyoti Nagar area on Monday. Police said that the accused fled with the gold chain of the deceased but left his bag at the spot. Police identified the deceased as Rajul Gupta, who lived with his family in East Jyoti Nagar area. He had an electronic goods showroom which is close to his residence.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North East) Ved Prakash Surya said that they were alerted about the incident around 11:30 pm on Monday. They got PCR call from the hospital about a person who was brought dead. During further investigation, his identity was revealed.

According to police, the incident took place around 9 pm when Gupta was returning home from his showroom on his scooty. He was about to reach his house when two accused on a motorcycle intercepted him. A scuffle was reported between the attackers and the victim in which Rajul was shot. Hearing the noise, his family members came out from the house and saw Rajul lying on the ground. "The deceased had a blood pressure problem so the family thought that he had a heart attack. He was rushed to the hospital," police said.

Adding further an officer said that the family members, after the incident, did not find any blood mark at the spot or injury on the body of Rajul. It was the doctors who discovered the gunshot wounds at the backside of the body and immediately informed the police.

Reports were coming that two calls were received about the incident. In the first call, Gupta's family members informed that his brother had a heart attack. Later it was hospital authority which informed them about the death. Officer said that investigation is going on.

"The family members have claimed that the gold chain was missing from the deceased body but his bag was found at the spot. The case is being probed from different angles including robbery and personal enmity," police said.

An investigator claimed that they could not find any eyewitness from the spot. "We questioned few people regarding the incident, most of them claimed that they heard some noise but no one saw the incident," investigator added. A case under appropriate sections of IPC was registered at Jyoti Nagar police station.
