Cybercrime: Workshop conducted for Gurugram police officials

GURUGRAM: With Cybercrime­s seeing an upward trend with every passing year a twoday workshop was conducted for the Gurugram police.

In the workshops, discussion­s of various ways of dealing with the crime that is occurring through digital means. A total of 60 officials participat­ed in the process. The second day of the programme will be held on day two.

Besides dealing with online thefts which still constitute­s the highest form of crime, Complaints of fake news being posted in the social media have seen an upward trend even as it does not figure among the top list of cybercrime­s.

The number of complaints pertaining to fake news being circulated on Facebook and Twitter his rising 40 per cent year on year .

While in 2016, there were over 200 such cases that were registered by the cybercrime police in 2019 there have already been 250 cases that have come to fore.

While this form of cybercrime is a new phenomenon, most of the criminals get emboldened by the fact there is still no stricter law that enables the law enforcemen­t officials to penalize them. Further, digital media enable most of the users to be anonymous.

There is no doubt that as the nation is progressin­g digitally criminals are taking to this route to carry out their nefarious acts. Today practicall­y every citizen has a Smartphone and therefore it has become easy for everyone with wrong intent to be a part of this crime, “said a senior police official from Gurugram police.

“Taking cognizance of this new form of crime our team is also trying to adapt to it. We too are adapting ourselves to deal with cybercrime­s. It is however also important for citizens to be careful and responsibl­e in their use of technology,” added the official.
