NEW DELHI: A woman journalist was dragged out of a moving auto in Delhi on Sunday evening, following which she suffered a hairline fracture along with multiple stitches. She recieved bruises at various parts of her body. The incident happened in broad daylight in Chittaranjan Park at around 5 pm on Sunday. The journalist, Joymala Bagchi, works with news agency ANI (Asian News International) and was admitted in the hospital soon after the incident.

She was attacked by two bike-borne assailants while she was travelling in an auto-rickshaw. She was pulled out of the auto, and her phone was snatched. The intensity of the attack was such that Joymala suffered five stitches on her chin, four on her upper lip, and five in her mouth.

The woman journalist also suffered a hairline fracture on her leg, and one on her upper jaw, after the attackers pulled her with force. The journalist who is originally from West Bengal is on a liquid diet and is under observation. “We are working on the case. Several teams have been formed to identify and arrest the snatchers,” said DCP South Atul Thakur.

“Last year after being assaulted in Noida, I shifted to Delhi thinking about better security, but if such an incident can happen in an upscale area like CR Park in broad daylight, then probably we are safe nowhere,” said Shreya Chatterjee, a TV Journalist.

The incident comes a day after a 67-year-old woman, a retired employee of the central Government cabinet secretariat was targeted by snatchers right outside her house in Hari Nagar in West Delhi.

On September 20, a couple on a scooter was chased by gun-wielding bike-borne snatchers in New Delhi KG Marg which made them fall and injure themselves. The woman also suffered a fracture on her shoulder.

“Analysis of crime showed that a maximum number of snatching robberies take place by criminals who are on motorcycles. Bikers in a certain age group are specifically checked by police staff on the roads to bring down such incidents,” said a senior Police officer.

Meanwhile, IIMC Alumni Association demands immediate arrest of road robbers.
