HBO’S epic fantasy drama received 32 nods including best drama series

LOS ANGELES: ‘Game of Thrones’ won the award for Outstanding Drama Series for its eighth and final season at Emmys 2019.

HBO’S epic fantasy drama dominated the Emmy Awards nominations with 32 nods including best drama series.

“These last 10 years have been the best years of our lives, I can’t believe we did it, we shall never see it’s like again... It’s amazing you are all still alive,” showrunner David Benioff said in his acceptance speech.

“Thank all of our lovely and amazing cast you make everything we write better. We love you and loved every minute we have spent with all of you,” added showrunner Dan Weiss. ‘GOT’ defeated seven other contenders for the best drama crown: BBC America’s ‘Killing Eve’, Netflix’s ‘Ozark’, AMC’S ‘Better Call Saul’, NBC’S ‘This Is Us’, FX’S ‘Pose’, Netflix’s ‘Bodyguard’ and HBO’S ‘Succession’.

Apart from the top honour, 10 actors from the show, including Peter Dinklage, Kit Harington, Emilia Clarke, Gwendoline Christie and Sophie Turner, were nominated in performance categories.

Billy Porter created Emmy history, became first openly gay, black man to win best actor in drama for his role in ‘Pose’. ‘Pose’, created by Ryan Murphy and Steven Canals, focuses on the extravagant subculture of the LGBTQ ballroom scene in late 1980s and early 1990s New York, as well of the lives of the people of the community.

On the show, Porter plays the gregarious emcee Pray Tell. In his acceptance speech, the actor quoted from James Baldwin’s 1960 essay ‘They Can’t Turn Back’. “It took many years of vomiting up all the filth I’d been taught about myself, and half-believed, before I was able to walk on the earth as if I had a right to be here,” Porter said as he recited Baldwin. “Pose” received six Emmy nominations this year, including Porter’s category and drama series.

Also, Phoebe Waller-bridge emerged a triple winner at Emmys 2019 as the writeractor took home the prize for lead actress in a comedy series, best comedy series and best comedy writing for her very personal dark comedy ‘Fleabag’.

Waller-bridge won the best actress trophy for the series on an angry, confused and sexually active woman in her 30s, besting Emmy favourite Julia Louis-dreyfus (‘Veep’) which came as a surprise.

“No! Oh my God, no!” she exclaimed as she took the stage.

The actor recognised the contribution of her fellow nominees, show’s director Harry Bradbeer and producers Amazon and BBC.

Also, Jharrel Jerome becomes first Afro-latino to win lead actor in limited series Emmy.
